Planning to be out in the sun this summer? The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code has designed some great activities for Groups while keeping in mind the harmful effects of the sun. The Melanoma Fund and The Scout Association ambassador, Julia Bradbury, are supporting the campaign. You can find great activities on Programmes Online to promote sun safety, search for outdoor kids sun safety and let us know how you get on.
Brought to you by the County Youth Programme team, The Essex Challenge gives all five youth sections the opportunity to take part in activities based around fun and engaging themes. The Essex Challenge also encourages us to do more to support moving in and moving on between the sections.
The Essex Challenge for 2014 follows a new format with six themed activities for each term, giving you the flexibility to choose when you complete them. The challenge is to complete at least four activities each term, so it’s up to you which activities you choose. If you have a go at all 18 then that’s half of your programme already planned for the year.
Send your photos and stories to email@example.com and we’ll use the best ones in Essex Plus to show the rest of the County what you’ve achieved with your young people.
Get stuck in and enjoy the challenge…The Essex Challenge.
Following an extensive consultation over the last 10 months within and outside of the Movement, I’m pleased to be able to advise you that we have today (7 October 2013) announced the introduction of an additional alternative to the Scout Promise that can be taken by people with no affirmed faith and humanists.
Alternative versions of the Scout Promise have been available for nearly 50 years and have been taken by Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and those who live in the UK but are not UK citizens. This new additional alternative to the Scout Promise will now ensure we are inclusive to young people and adults who are humanist or have no affirmed faith and wish to join Scouting.
Faith and non-faith leaders as well as the World Scout Committee have warmly welcomed this move, and the introduction of an additional alternative to the Scout Promise signifies our determination to become truly inclusive and relevant to all sections of society whilst maintaining our core values.
The core Scout Promise which has referred to ‘Duty to God’ for 106 years remains unchanged and we remain fully committed as a Movement that explores faith and religion as a core element of its programme.
Further information can be found at www.scouts.org.uk/fundamentals. This includes:
The additional alternative version to the Scout Promise will be available to be used from 1 January 2014 and plans are underway to help prepare members for this change. In the meantime please check our website for updates and more information.

I have been working hard over the past year to ensure that we have a solid base of people to advise not only me but all Adults within the District in specific areas. Some of these appointments will already be common knowledge to many adult members, but some are relatively recent appointments. Contact details for all advisers will be available through the new directory which will be ready online soon and in the meantime please email me and I will forward you the contact details.
Where the adviser covers an activity which requires a permit under the Nights Away Scheme or Adventurous Activity Scheme they will be able to advise on that process as well as the actual activity. You kind find a list of District Advisers below.
In the meantime I would like to thank the District Advisers for there assistance and support.
